For more information on your fear,why not call a sleep disorder clinic.I think the damage comes from being over tired and becoming confused,short tempered,forgetful,changed eating habits,sleep walking(after many nights of no sleep),becoming dazed,emotionally drained,etc…I get insomnia quite often for weeks at a time, and I don’t think I have brain damage. )Many people have sleep disorders and are not brain damaged because of it.
Ask the first doctor why he/she won’t treat you. It could be that there are medication interactions between sleep aids and whatever you take for your bipolar disorder. Perhaps you need a different dosage of your current bipolar meds — they’re supposed to help even you out, which could help you sleep. Consider getting a second opinion with another psychiatrist. Third, consider some non-medication strategies: some therapy, perhaps, could help you start sleeping better at night, rather than adding another medication to your routine.

exercise about 6 pm or so, …no later, and do not eat after 6 either, the digestion of food can add to insomnia.also, go to bed at the same time every night and get up early at the same time too…so its a routine
